Brass Orrery Model Kit, 19 Inches Tall

This orrery model kit builds a working mechanical planetarium from 200 brass and metal components. Turn the drive and the planet arms carry each sphere around the central sun on its own gear ratio, including the retrograde spin of Venus.
What the Finished Orrery Does
- All eight planets ride on individually geared arms around a brass sun, with Pluto and its moons carried on the outermost arm
- Planet spheres are turned wood, hand painted to distinguish each body
- The base is ink printed sandstone, which gives the model weight and keeps the arms stable while they turn
- Brass finish throughout the frame, gears and arms
- Roughly 20 hours of assembly, so it is a multi weekend project rather than an evening build

Where the Orrery Fits
- Astronomy enthusiasts who want a mechanical solar system model rather than a printed poster or globe
- Home offices, studies and libraries where a 19 inch brass instrument works as a centrepiece
- Science teachers and lecturers demonstrating orbital periods and planetary motion in class
- Graduation, retirement and milestone birthday gifts for someone with a scientific streak
Orreries have been built as desk instruments since clockmakers George Graham and Thomas Tompion made the first geared planetary models in the early 1700s, and this metal kit follows the same brass and gear tradition in a form you assemble yourself.
